There is a specific flavor of retail choreography where a company raises a price, waits a beat, then stages a sale that lands the sticker back where it started. Kobo just did the moves. The Libra Colour, bumped to $259.99 not long ago, is now $229.99 at Kobo, Best Buy, and Target. That is not a discount on the product. That is a discount on the increase.

Grumbling aside, the Libra Colour remains the most interesting non-Kindle on the shelf. It has a seven-inch color E Ink Kaleido 3 panel, physical page-turn buttons, 32GB of storage, IPX8 waterproofing, and adjustable warm frontlight. Amazon's $249.99 Kindle Colorsoft matches the color trick and probably renders it a touch more vividly, but it drops the buttons, halves the storage, and locks you deeper into Amazon's file handling. Kobo reads EPUB natively, pulls in Pocket-successor Instapaper for saved articles, and supports the optional Stylus 2 for margin notes and handwriting-to-text.

The catches are worth naming. Color E Ink is still dimmer, grainier, and lower-resolution in color mode (about 150 ppi) than the same panel is in monochrome (300 ppi). If you mostly read novels, the color layer is a tax you pay in contrast and battery. Stylus 2 is a $69.99 add-on, not in the box. And Kobo's software, while pleasantly ad-free, still has a rougher library search and slower store than Amazon's.

The real question is whether $229.99 is the ceiling of what a mid-size color e-reader should cost in 2026, or the floor Kobo will keep testing upward. Given the pattern here, expect another quiet nudge later this year.

The Libra Colour is available now at $229.99 in black or white directly from Rakuten Kobo, with matching pricing at Best Buy and Target while stock holds.
