Apple's Best Companion Feature for the AirPods Pro 3 Is Buried Three Menus Deep in iOS Accessibility

Background Sounds quietly turns the $249 earbuds into a focus tool, but burying it under Accessibility is a product decision worth questioning.

Apple's Best Companion Feature for the AirPods Pro 3 Is Buried Three Menus Deep in iOS Accessibility

The AirPods Pro 3 ship with Apple's strongest Active Noise Cancellation to date, and yet the most useful way to actually focus while wearing them is a feature most owners will never find. It lives under Settings, Accessibility, Audio/Visual, Background Sounds. That is a strange place to bury what is, in practice, a core audio feature of Apple's flagship earbuds.

Background Sounds is a built-in ambient noise generator. It has been around for years, but recent additions have made it genuinely useful. The Fire loop arrived in iOS 18, and iOS 26 added Rain on Roof along with per-sound EQ adjustment. Layered under the ANC of the AirPods Pro 3, it does the job that third-party apps like Dark Noise and myNoise have done for a long time, without the subscription or the extra icon on the Home Screen.

The interesting question is why this needs to exist at all. If ANC on the AirPods Pro 3 is as improved as Apple claims, a quiet room should not require synthetic rain on top. In reality, ANC is still weakest against the things humans actually find distracting: speech, sudden barks, a toddler at full volume. Broadband noise masks those frequencies in a way passive isolation and ANC cannot. That is a useful admission of physics, not a flaw.

The real complaint is placement. Background Sounds belongs in the AirPods control panel next to Conversation Awareness and the listening modes, not under an Accessibility submenu that most users associate with VoiceOver and motor settings. Adding it to Control Center helps, but it remains a feature you have to be told about.

AirPods Pro 3 are listed at $249, currently discounted to $179 at several retailers. Background Sounds is free with any recent version of iOS. Full product details are on Apple's AirPods Pro page.
