Theater on Vision Pro keeps betting that a $12.99 podcast livestream is the killer immersive app

Every June, the same small ritual keeps repeating itself on Apple Vision Pro. Sandwich Vision fires up Theater, points its stereoscopic rig at John Gruber and a couple of Apple executives, and sells tickets to the only live 3D broadcast anybody actually talks about. Tonight at 7pm PT it happens for the third year running, and the fact that it is still the headline use-case for a $3,499 headset is worth sitting with for a minute.

Theater launched alongside the first post-WWDC Talk Show in 2024 and has since picked up Plex integration and an immersive planetarium mode, which is a polite way of saying its catalog is still thin. The pitch tonight is straightforward: $12.99 buys you a live stereoscopic feed of the show, plus permanent replay access with some unspecified bonus features. That is roughly the price of a movie ticket, for a podcast taping you could otherwise watch flat on YouTube for free.

The case for paying is the format. Live stereoscopic capture of a real event, beamed into a virtual theater you are sitting in, is the kind of thing Apple keeps gesturing at in keynotes without actually shipping at scale. Sandwich Vision, run by Adam Lisagor, has quietly become the company doing the work Apple itself has not, and the production has gotten visibly more confident each year. If you own the hardware, this is closer to a flagship demo than anything in Apple's own Immersive tab.

The harder question is what it says about visionOS that a single annual broadcast from an indie studio is still the reference point. Two years in, the library of live immersive events you can actually buy a ticket to is, generously, one. Theater itself is a free download. The show starts at 7pm PT tonight; more details are on Daring Fireball.
