watchOS 27 strands the Apple Watch Series 8 after just four years, and Apple isn't saying why

The interesting thing about Apple's watchOS 27 announcement at WWDC 2026 isn't the Siri rework or the Dynamic App Grid. It's the quiet decision to retire three watches that were still on the current OS a year ago, including one that launched at $799.

The casualties are the Apple Watch Series 8, the original Apple Watch Ultra, and the SE (2nd generation). All three shipped in 2022. All three will be four years old when watchOS 27 arrives this fall. Apple has drawn the new line at the S9 chip, meaning Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Ultra 2, Ultra 3, and the SE 3 are the only models invited forward.

The pattern break is what stings. watchOS 26 carried the same support floor as watchOS 11 before it, going back to the Series 6. Lopping off three generations in a single cycle is not how Apple has historically treated its wearables, and the company offered no engineering rationale, no transition policy, and no acknowledgement that an $799 titanium Ultra aging out at four years looks bad next to the eight years of iOS updates an iPhone of the same vintage tends to get.

There is also a second tier of fine print worth noting. Even on supported watches, the headline Apple Intelligence features require pairing with an iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 or newer to do the heavy compute. So a Series 9 owner with an iPhone 14 technically gets watchOS 27, but not the marquee experience Apple is using to sell it. The watch is supported. The story it tells is not.

watchOS 27 ships this fall as a free update for eligible models. Apple has not published a public statement on the dropped devices. The official software overview lives at apple.com/watchos.
